How to read the graphs:

The following plots show the distribution of pH, organic matter, exchangeable Potassium and "Hartz" ratio for the Midwest, including farms from Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania. The distribution plots are based on soil tests sent to us by tomato growers and collaborators and show the diversity of soil characteristics of this region. Percentage of farms falling in each range are listed above the distribution bars.

We are now investigating the role of soil nutrients on the occurrence of YSD based on soil and fruit color data collected in 2001-2002. For each distribution plot, we have indicated the range of values where lower or higher risk of yellow shoulder disorder may occur. These are preliminary results and more research is needed to fully understand the occurrence and management of color disorders in tomatoes.
