Request for Proposals - some areas of current research interest are
outlined below. However A.R.F. research foundation welcomes all
proposals dealing with important aspects of alpaca health, husbandry,
genetics and fiber. Health: in the area of health, A.R.F. is seeking proposals for the prevention, early detection and treatment of disorders which are a significant problem in alpacas including, but not limited to, meningeal worm, clostridium perfringens infection, dystocias and West Nile Virus. A.R.F. is also interested in funding proposals to study the pharmacolinetic profiles of drugs that might be useful for the treatment of alpacas. Husbandry: in the area of husbandry, A.R.F. is seeking proposals to establish optimal nutritional requirements of the alpaca, including trace minerals and vitamins at various stages of growth and development. Genetics: in the area of genetics, A.R.F. is seeking proposals to identify objective measures of fleece character and to determine the influence of genetic and environmental factors on those measures. ARS encourages but does not require collaborative studies between institutions and researchers. |

The University of California, Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources is soliciting research proposals for targeted research to address the threat of Pierce's Disease to the Grape Industry. The disease is caused by Xylella fastidiosa, a bacterium that clogs the xylem in plants and inhibits their ability to take in water and nutrients. The Pierce's Disease threat to the Viticulture and other agriculture industries has been exacerbated by the recent introduction and establishment of the highly efficient vector, the Glassy-winged Sharpshooter in Southern California and in other areas of the Southwest United States. | April 16, 2004 | |
| Illinois-Missouri Biotechnology Alliance (IMBA) | It is the goal of IMBA's Executive Committee to fund research that advances the basic and applied science of agricultural biotechnology. Competitively awarded grants will be made to projects in one of two broad areas. (A) Profitability of corn and soybean. This can be either at the level of production, processing or uses, including enhancing the use of soy foods and increasing the knowledge of the benefits of corn and soy nutrition. (B) Improving our understanding of the socioeconomic variables that influence the adoption of agrobiotech and/or the attitudes and purchasing decisions of consumers. The Directorate for
Biological Sciences of the National Science Foundation announces its
intention to support the establishment of a NEON Coordinating
Consortium (NCC), which will provide the scientific leadership,
administration, community participation, and overall governance of NEON
and include a NEON Project Office. The latter will initially plan and
coordinate activities for NEON, while, ultimately, it will be
responsible for the construction and daily management of NEON. Award information Anticipated funding is $6,000,000 for 24 months. Pending availability of funds up to $3,000,000 will be provided in FY2004 and up to $3,000,000 in FY2005. Following a successful merit review and pending availability of funds, one award, made as a cooperative agreement, is expected to be funded by September 30, 2004 for up to two years. Request for Proposal (RFP) - USGC is encouraging interested individuals
and/or organizations to demonstrate their ability to fulfill the
objectives and requirements of the contract, to summarize the nature of
the project: the council is interested in sending an expert in
biotechnology policy formulation to the Central Laboratory for Food and
Feed Grains (CLFF Lab) in Cairo, Egypt. Expectations for work performed
include: --Study current regulations in northern Africa, the Middle East and the Mediterranean pertinent to the movement of genetically modified grain and develop a database of these policies. --Assist in the revision and/or construction of science-based regional biotechnology regulations. --Conduct seminars to educate regional decision makers, public opinion leaders, and university personnel on the importance of science-based regulation and risk assessment. |

The Office of International Affairs is awarding grants of up to
$5,000 to support interdisciplinary lectures, seminar series, or
conferences on international themes. These activities may focus on
one particular geographical area, or they may involve systematic
cross-regional perspectives on themes of global relevance. Proposals
are invited from faculty, interdisciplinary and area study centers,
and academic units. Eligibility is contingent upon the commitment of
partial counterpart funds from other sources.
The Office of International Affairs is soliciting applications from
faculty who are proposing to collaborate with foreign scholars in
preparing a research grant proposal, participate in a
faculty-exchange program, develop agreements linking OSU to major
foreign institutions, or complete a manuscript jointly authored
with a foreign based scholar. Typical grants range from $1,500 to
$2,000, with a maximum ceiling of $3,000. With the exception of
those faculty members proposing to participate in an OSU
faculty-exchange program, applicants are required to secure
counterpart funds from OSU or external funding agencies, The
application deadline is Friday (4/7).

The USDA Forest Service Northeastern Research Station in cooperation
with State and Private Forestry requests proposals for an Economic
Assessment of the costs and economic benefits associated with
management of the gypsy
moth, Lymantria dispar. Gypsy moth is an exotic invasive pest that
has been gradually expanding its range in North America since its
accidental release approximately 135 years ago. Although considerable
information exists about the indirect and direct ecological and
economic impacts of the gypsy moth, there have been only a few prior
attempts to evaluate the costs and economic benefits associated its
management.
