Grants to Study Organic Agricultural Production Available!

The CCOF Foundation, in collaboration with partner organizations (UNFI Foundation, Driscoll’s, Organic Valley, and Bradmer Foods)will be making grants in three educational categories in 2014 to directly support students of organic agricultural production and professional career tracks that support organic. In particular, they are looking to serve disadvantaged populations who otherwise would not be able to study organic. Grants will be made to students and teachers only, not to organizations.   Deadline for K-8 Grants and Higher/Vocational Education Grants is June 13, 2014.  For more information:

Organic Weed Management Webinar Series - Experts from Ohio State University's College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences will present a webinar series designed to help farmers learn updated approaches and practices for managing weeds with a focus on crop rotations, cover crops and soil management. The webinar series runs the first four Mondays in March from noon to 1:30 p.m. The webinars are free and open to the public but require preregistration.

2014 OFFER Spring Symposium, April 7, 2014 – The Ohio State University’s Organic Food and Farming Education and Research (OFFER) program is inviting farmers, scientists, and anyone else interested in organic food and farming to attend its spring symposium titled “Partnering for Growth and Success in Organic Agriculture.”  It’s from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m., April 7, at the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center’s Fisher Auditorium, 1680 Madison Avenue in Wooster. OFFER Field Day, June 17, 2014.  The 2014 Field Day will include the organic naked oats and pastured poultry project.  More details will be available soon, but save the date.

Organic Poultry Pasture Walk & Discussion, September 21, 2013 at OARDC’s East Badger Organic Research Farm.  At this follow-up pasture walk, participants were able to see the broilers at the end of the growing cycle and discuss results. 


OFFER Organic & Sustainable Agriculture Field Day was held September 5, 2013 at the Hirzel Site in Bowling Green, Ohio. 


Organic Poultry Pasture Walk & Discussion, August 29, 2013 at OARDC’s East Badger Organic Research Farm.  Researchers from OSU/OARDC discussed the benefits of including broilers in an organic crop rotation.  Dr. Mike Lilburn talked about alternative organic poultry diets; Dr. Larry Phelan covered organic crop rotation and soil fertility; and John Anderson discussed day to day management of chicks in mobile units on pasture.


Organic Animal Health Symposium, March 18, 2013, at The Blackwell Inn and Conference Center, Columbus, Ohio.  Sponsored by OSU Veterinary Extension and OFFER, the Organic Animal Health Symposium focused on animal health in certified organic production systems. The symposium was designed to generate discussion on organic animal health practices as well as the need for research and education. Researchers, Extension professionals, veterinary practitioners, producers, and consumers were invited to attend. Our speakers represent leaders and experts from university, industry, and organic dairy operations. 


Future Directions for Organic Agriculture Research, Thursday, November 1, 2012. This summit of organic leaders discussed the future of organic farming, opportunities for growth, and the anticipated needs for research and education.
