Identity-Preserved Processing Industry

Cliff Meeuwsen, President, Zeeland Farm Services, gave a stimulating presentation on this family-owned business, with emphasis on production of specialized oil and meal products from identity-preserved soybeans. The company crushes approximately 10,000,000 bushels of soybeans per year, using the solvent system. Products include low-saturated and low-linolenic oils, oil for production of B100 (bio-fuel) from high-oil soybeans, and high-protein meals. These products are produced to the specifications of customers. Cliff did an excellent job of describing the extra steps and costs needed to ensure the necessary quality and quantity of these products. He is interested in adding new identity-preserved products. He mentioned several developments that would help his business: higher oil content in specialty oil varieties, varieties that dry well during processing or feature hulls that are easily removed, varieties high in oleic acid, and a cheaper esterification process for production of B100.

 Edamame

Bill Cox reported that the pre-proposal submitted to the Northeast SARE program was one of about 50 pre-proposals selected for a full proposal. There were 188 pre-proposals submitted. The edamame group met to plan the full proposal, which is due October 28. Bill will write the first draft, and Lynne Brown will take responsibility for the consumer survey.

Steve St. Martin reported on the edamame pre-proposal submitted to North Central SARE in June. The review panel will meet soon and the results will be announced in September.
