ABSTRACT SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS (see
sample below)
Authors are encouraged to submit
abstracts using the abstract submission web form.
This will greatly simplify generation and distribution of the symposium
proceedings. However, abstracts may also be submitted by mail or fax by printing
and completing this pdf form
viewable using Adobe
Acrobat software. Send the completed form by mail or fax to: Composting
2002, The Ohio State University, 1680 Madison Ave., Wooster, Ohio 44691; Fax:
610-967-1345 (USA).
All abstracts
must be received by August 31, 2001. NOTE:
THE ABSTRACT SUBMISSION DEADLINE HAS BEEN EXTENDED TO SEPTEMBER 14,
2001 DUE TO STRONG INTEREST IN THE SYMPOSIUM.
1.Character count limit. Maximum of 2002 characters not
including spaces between words. Most word processing applications provide statistics on characters used in a file.
Experiment to determine if your word processing application counts spaces as characters.
2. Use ASCII text only. ASCII is the only possible format for Internet submission.
If web submission is not possible, for consistency and accuracy we
require that submission on diskette be in the ASCII text form as well. ASCII text includes all normal upper- and
lowercase alphanumerics and common punctuation marks available on your keypad.
Symbols, non ASCII characters: All symbols (Greek, math,
etc.) must be spelled out. If your abstract requires repetitive use of a particular symbol you may want to
define it once and later represent the symbol with a character in parentheses. For example: degrees(o) C.
Bold, Italic styling. As ASCII does not support bold and
italic styles, a provision has been made for this formatting. Italic words or phrases must be enclosed by start and stop
coding like this: <i>words</i>. Bold words or phrases must be enclosed by the coding <b>words</b>. A bold italic
word would be coded as follows: <b><i>word</i></b>. Note that there are no spaces between the coding and the
words or phrases you wish to style. Text formatted correctly in this manner will appear correctly formatted in
print. Coding for bold and/or italic will not count toward the character limit.
Title: No coding of the title is required-- it will automatically
have bold styling in print. For example, The title will automatically appear bold.
Authors: Identify the presenter by typing the name in ALL
CAPS. Use first name and middle initial with a space but no period between initials. Use numerals and parentheses to code authors with their affiliations. For example,
Ian M SPEAKER (1), Uri R Author (2).
Author affiliations. Use numerals and parentheses to code
author affiliations. For example, (1) Dept. Compost Engineering, University of
Antarctica (2) Global University.
3. Superscripts, subscripts: ASCII does not support these characters. To indicate a superscript or subscript enclose
the characters in parentheses. A superscript character may be indicated by a caret inside the parentheses preceding
the character; for example, E = MC(^2); subscript example= H(2)O. You may use parentheses in text for the usual parenthetical expressions. Superscript and subscript
characters will be converted into correct style in the printed abstract book.
4. Font or typeface: Use a common text font such as Times, Times New Roman, Helvetica,
Arial or Courier to type your text.
5. Save the file as text (.txt), rich text (.rft), or as a Microsoft WORD or WordPerfect document.
Copy and paste the title, authors, affiliations, and abstract itself separately
into each relevant field box of the Abstract Submission Form.
DO NOT repeat information from the title, authors, or affiliations within the abstract field box.

Sample Abstract
Title: The Title will Automatically Appear Bold
Authors: Ian M SPEAKER (1), Uri R Author (2)
Affiliations: (1) Dept. Compost Engineering, Univ. of Antarctica (2) Global
University
Abstract:
The abstract should be carefully written to stay within the maximum limit of
2,002 characters, including title, author, affiliation, which should all be
entered in their respective separate boxes on the form. An abstract should
contain the usual components of good presentation: description of the problem,
methodology, results, and concluding statement. The abstract should be concise
with just enough information to introduce your subject and generate interest.
The character limit ensures that the abstract will fit the prescribed space for
a consistent and economical printing of the symposium abstracts in the <i>2002
Symposium Proceedings</i>. The ASCII format ensures that the abstract will
appear correctly on the web. Abstracts will be posted on the web prior to the
Symposium date and provide a good way to preview presentations and make plans.
Note that the coding for italics that surround the name of the journal <i>Composting
Science and Utilization</i> will make that word italicized in print and on
the Internet. This sample is 1,104 characters including title, authors, and
affiliations, but not counting spaces or coding for bold and italic formatting.
