Massive Parallele Signature (MPS) sequencing

Instrumentation

We are in the process of acquiring the Illumina - Solexa Genome Analyzer. This technology is based on massively parallel sequencing (MPS) of millions of fragments using clonal single molecule array technology and reversible terminator-bases sequencing. The addition of labeled ddNTP is monitored by a CCD camera. Some features:
The read size per fragment is currently 35 bases. Soon with the pair-end-eads upgrade it will be up to 60 bases. One 3 day run produces 1 billion bases.
Applications include re-sequencing (example: SNP detection by comparison to a reference genome), microRNA sequencing, RNA expression analysis and eventually small genome de-novo sequencing.
