For the first time since 1990, the USDA has released an updated version of the Plant Hardiness Zone Map (PHZM), this time incorporating GIS functionality, making it available both as an interactive, web-based tool and as static maps. Effective Jan. 1, 2012, new rules issued by the International Botanical Congress do away with the requirement to describe new species in Latin. Newly identified species will still have Latin binomial names. More.
