As a
branch of The Ohio State University, the University policies on network use and
access are those of the Office of Information Technology (http://oit.osu.edu/networking/network_policies.php). Since we manage our own infrastructure
separately, we have special policies unique to our situation.
Firewall and Prohibited Applications: For security and firewall reasons, we do not support desktop server
applications. Web and file serving applications are hosted on servers
owned and maintained by CSS and adequate space is made available to all faculty
and staff by request. Peer-to-peer file serving applications are not permitted.
This restriction applies to file serving applications of questionable legality
such as Kazaa, Gnutella, Bittorrent and others of that type.
Network Access: Network access is available to any OSU
employee, staff, or associate as outlined in the OIT Computing Usage policy
which each user signs when obtaining a network userid. Access may be restricted
or removed by OIT or OIT Security for serious breaches of the usage
policy. Email accounts are assigned by
OIT; CSS can request accounts for employees, students or official guests. Requests may be made in person in the CSS
office (131 Research Services) by presentation of proper identification.
OARDC Campus infrastructure: CSS maintains the campus network and
networking equipment including all connectivity between buildings and the OSU
main campus. CSS provides all equipment
from the wall to the network for all computing equipment (switches, routers,
etc) at no charge to the unit. If a
department desires resources above what CSS determines is reasonable or is of a
specialized nature, then the department may be responsible for the excess costs
incurred. Renovations of buildings or
areas should include funding for network infrastructure changes. CSS also provides all wireless Access Points
and connectivity to the entire campus.
For reasons of security and compatibility, departments or users are not
permitted to install ‘private’ switches or other network devices; any network changes will be done by CSS
acting upon a request from the end user.
Routers, hardwired or wireless, are expressly forbidden and will be
confiscated by CSS when detected. While
CSS handles the network equipment, wiring and cabling is performed by
Facilities Services and requests for these should be made through the
Facilities Services work order submission facility.
Cooperating Units: CSS provides the network infrastructure for
Cooperating non-OARDC units on the Wooster campus at no additional charge to
the unit. Special requests and network
modifications may result in a cost-recovery charge-back to the unit.

this policy may be denied access to university computing resources and may be
subject to other penalties and disciplinary action, both within and outside of
the university." |
