Power Outage In Columbus Affected Multiple Services - 10/19/2007
The Columbus campus had a power outage today. This notice was taken from:
http://8help.osu.edu/status.html

Most OSU central IT systems were affected by a power outage beginning at 10:15 this morning. As of now, most services have been restored. Services which were down but have been restored include central email, Carmen, account self-help, and the OSU Web server. Services not yet restored include but are not limited to:

* The ability to search from the OSU home page
* OIT's Calendar service
* The student information system/Mainframe
* Software Downloads
* the Peoplesoft system is up, but logins have been temporarily suspended to ascertain the integrity of the data.)

Please note that as a side effect of the mainframe being unavailable,many services on Buckeyelink will not be available. System administrators are working diligently to restore the remaining OIT services. We apologize for the delay.

Minitab 15 for portable devices - 9/21/2007
We announced a short time ago about Minitab 14 being replaced by Minitab 15, but the Minitab 15 licensed by the University requires an Internet connection to function. This is a problem with laptops which are used to travel. For these devices, you may purchase a perpetual license of Minitab 15 from Minitab (for $99) and after on-line activation, you can use it anywhere without the Internet connection requirement. If you are interested in this, contact us for more information. Thanks to Lee Wilson for researching this.

Minitab users -- info on Minitab 15 - 9/13/2007
This is an important notice for users of Minitab. Version 14 is expiring and there is no renewal license code for this product, so you must upgrade to version 15. Good news and bad news – it is still ‘free’, BUT in order to install and use Minitab 15, you must be using a computer connected to the OSU network. This is not only for the installation, but also for each use. So, an installation on a laptop computer, for example, cannot be used unless the laptop is connected to the network at the time the ‘run’ command is issued. The software automatically connects to a license server and if the server cannot be found, the software will not run. This means it cannot be used when traveling or at home or anyplace other than on an OSU campus. We are investigating alternatives to the ‘site license’ and will provide further information as we obtain it.

FW: OIT Notice of Planned Maintenance - 9/10/2007
This is a planned maintenance notice from OIT. Official statement: On Sunday, September 16, 2007, between 12:01 AM and 3:00 AM, OIT Networking staff will be performing system maintenance on the campus DNS servers that serve the Columbus, Mansfield, Marion, Newark, and Wooster campuses, as well as the South Campus Gateway area. The planned maintenance will cause a brief outage of each server; however, DNS services are expected to remain available during the maintenance window due to built-in system redundancy. Questions regarding this planned maintenance should be directed to OIT at 688-HELP (4357) or 8HELP@osu.edu.

Emergency campus network outage Saturday - 9/7/2007
There will be a total network outage Saturday (9/8/2007) morning from 8am until 10am for replacement of an emergency electrical generator in the Research Services Building. This will affect all Internet connectivity including email and web services for all OARDC campus buildings, ATI, the ATI dorm, and all residences on the OARDC and ATI campuses. This planned outage is to prevent future unplanned outages. Hopefully, the transition will go well and service restored quicker than projected. Please schedule around this inconvenience.
