OSU Extension Workshop to Help Guide Dairy Producers into Future
2/2/2010
WOOSTER, Ohio – Last year was a challenging time for Ohio dairy producers, with many farmers losing profits and going further into debt. As farmers look to 2010, Ohio State University Extension is there to help them evaluate historic production costs and project future costs.
OSU Extension will offer a dairy workshop on Feb. 17 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Shisler Center on the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center campus in Wooster, Ohio. "Futuring the Dairy Farm Business: In, Out, Moving Ahead" will provide the tools producers need to evaluate their current business position and make informed and effective decisions to meet the farm's short and long-term objectives.
Topics being covered include calculating cost of production, milk price outlook, managing milk prices at the farm level, and legal issues. Speakers include: Eric Meyer, a risk management consultant with Downes-O'Neill, FCStone; Cameron Thraen, an OSU Extension agricultural economist; Warren Graeff, a market manager in agri-banking for PNC Bank; Peggy Hall, director of the OSU Ag and Rural Law Program; Paul Wright, an attorney for Wright Law Company; and Dianne Shoemaker, an OSU Extension dairy management specialist.
The first 100 reservations are fully covered by sponsor support. Reservations for industry personnel and producer reservations after the first 100 seats have been reserved will be accepted at $30 per person. Registration deadline is Feb. 12.
Workshop sponsors include the Ohio Dairy Research Fund, the Wayne County Dairy Service Unit, National City, Commodity Blenders, Farm Credit Services of Mid-America, OSU Extension, and the North Center Risk Management Education Center.
